In 1833 he founded the Oxford Movement which eventually led him to become a Catholic in 1845. Soon afterwards he was ordained a Catholic priest and became founder of the English Oratory of St. Philip Neri.
Newman was a prolific writer of English prose, educator and founder of the Catholic University of Ireland. As a distinguished Catholic theologian he was created a cardinal in 1879 by Pope Leo XIII. An outstanding 19th century English convert to Catholicism, Blessed John Henry Newman was beatified in Birmingham, England on September 19, 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI.
